Maritime Accidents

January 15, 2013

Maritime Accidents  –  Injury and death claims involving boats, ships and passenger ferries will often involve industry investigations and operating standards;  and will likely involve the expertise of investigators, inspectors, surveyors and expert consultants.  Attorneys handling these claims should have expertise in the regulations and requirements for the design, construction, maintenance and operation of maritime operations and vessels.  The Office of Marine Safety for the National Transportation Safety Board investigates maritime accidents and incidents, and is currently investigating the most recent New York City ferry crash. The most recent crash involved a high-speed ferry carrying hundreds of commuters traveling from New Jersey.  The ferry crashed into a dock in lower Manhattan during a morning rush hour, seriously injuring at least eleven people, reportedly including one who suffered a severe head wound falling down a stairwell.  Aspects of maritime litigation investigations and claims include evidence collection through report completion, and the documenting and analyzing of every aspect of shipboard operations including navigation, engineering, human performance and the various factors relevant to passenger and crew survival.
