Bus Passenger Safety

June 21, 2012

The safety of bus passengers is a concern of the industry and the traveling public. Passenger injuries often result from motor vehicle crashes, slips and falls while boarding and leaving the bus, injuries suffered while on board the bus and injuries occurring while accessing and leaving the bus stop. A bus passenger relies on the operator’s skills and professionalism, and is entitled to a reasonable expectation that the bus driver will take due care of the passenger. Factors that affect passenger safety include:

  • Driver selection and hiring practices
  • Driver behavior and human error
  • Driver training and retraining
  • Safety programs
  • Guidelines for acceleration, deceleration and sudden turns
  • Right-turn/left-turn and bus stop collisions
  • Design and location of bus stops
  • Vehicle design and safety
  • National standards of passenger care.
