Black Box

October 6, 2011

Event Data Recorders (black boxes) are motor vehicle electronic devices that are capable of capturing information related to a crash. The technology is becoming increasingly recognized as another tool for use in reconstructing accidents. The stored data that is available from an EDR can be treated as evidence, indicating that preservation and spoliation issues apply. The current status of EDR technology in passenger cars and light trucks is evolving, but the future will probably involve EDR data being used in all significant injury case accident reconstructions.
