School Bus Safety

September 21, 2011

It’s back to school season and we’re thinking about School Bus Passenger Safety. For more than 20 million youngsters, each day begins and ends with a trip on a bus. The greatest risks to student bus passengers occur not only while riding, but also while approaching and exiting the school bus. It is essential to designate safe loading and unloading areas. It is important to consider bus stop safety, as well as off-site safety. Compliance with Federal, state and local safety standards is required. Care should be given to bus driver selection, hiring, supervision and training. If any of these and other standards are not reasonably met, injury and death may result. Legal counsel should be familiar with transportation, vehicular and traffic litigation.
