Student-athlete concussions

September 18, 2011

New York Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo has signed a new law designed to increase protections for student-athletes who suffer concussions, including so-called mild concussions. The measure was introduced and championed by Long Island legislators. The new law requires any student who is believed to have suffered a concussion to be immediately removed from athletic activities. The student will be allowed to return to the sports activity only after he or she is symptom-free for at least 24 hours and cleared by a physician. The law additionally requires coaches, teachers and other school personnel to receive training about concussion symptoms. Although originally intended to apply to student football players, and receiving the support of the National Football League, the law applies to all athletic endeavors.
